A mean mark score of students increased by 1.89 (β = 1.89 95%CI: 1.14, 2.64) for a unit increase in BMI for age z-score. Statistical association of dependent and independent variables was declared at p-value < 0.05. Descriptive statistics, binary and multiple linear regression analysis were done.

Data were analyzed using Stata software Version 15. The academic performance of the adolescents was measured using the mean mark score of two consecutive semesters' results of all subjects. Nutritional interventions should be considered in the study area. Stunting and underweight were found to be correlated with academic performance of students attending primary schools. Multiple logistic regression analysis also indicated that being female, attending above grade 4, having educated parents, coming from households with monthly income of more than 2000ETB (~USD91) and having no parental support during homework were significantly associated with students' academic performance. This study found a significant correlation between underweight (r = 0.222, P = 0.040), stunting (r = 0.214, P = 0.034) and academic performance.

Prevalence of stunting, wasting and underweight in this study were 20.6%, 12.7% and 14.3% respectively. Logistic regression analysis was also performed to assess predictors of academic performance and p < 0.05 was used to declare significant association.
